12.10pm Sedgefield – Lochnell 2pts Win (7/4)
A pretty weak affair to kick start the day at Sedgefield where Lochnell can take advantage. He’s been competing in stronger contests than this in recent times and is back on his last winning mark of 102. All ground comes alike to him and with this small field playing to his strengths, can gain a success against rivals that all have questions marks surrounding their claims.
1.55pm Sandown – Darebin 2pts Win (5/1)
Since going chasing, Darebin has gained one victory and a pair of seconds and I can see him enhancing that record today. Runner up to Bigmartre on his debut over the larger obstacles has shown to be a strong piece of form with the winner that day going in again at Newbury. Darebin may have got slightly fortunate when winning at Ludlow when Robinshill fell, but regardless that looks like a decent race with that faller winning twice since and the second running well in a Cheltenham handicap subsequently. A third in last season Imperial Cup is very good and shows how talented he is, he steps up in trip today and if handling that should prove that he’s better than a mark of 123.
2.05pm Exeter – Calipto 2pts Win (7/4)
Calipto has kept pretty decent company for the majority of his career and has run some very good races, including when 6th in the Grand Annual at the Cheltenham Festival in March this year (races off 4lbs lower today). He takes a healthy drop in Grade here which should see him get his head back in front for the first time since October 2015. I feel that his reappearance effort didn’t require a big enough test of stamina over 2m1f on good ground in a Listed race at Ascot, with that run under his belt and with these conditions looking to suit him better, he will take all the beating.
