3.05pm Wetherby – Bonne Question 1pt Win (8/1)
A very interesting runner here for Venetia Williams, Bonne Question was making his return from a 643 day absence at Catterick last month when last of nine runners. But he was fresh enough early on and following such a long time off the track he should come on plenty for that effort and the encouraging signs were that he jumped well. Based on his 2016 hurdling form he’s very well-handicapped and should have races in him off this sort of mark, taking a chance that he retains all his old ability though.
4.10pm Wetherby – Newberry New 2pts Win (2/1)
This contest is down to half the runners than were officially declared and it looks an uncompetitive race in which the in-form Newberry New will take all the beating. He hasn’t been outside the top 3 so far this season and gone 10lbs up the weights with a pair of victories but he’s on really good terms with himself and should be able to get back in the winners enclosure. A three time winner on heavy ground, including a Grade 3 when trained with Jessica Harrington, these conditions will be no problem.
5.35pm Newcastle – American Gigolo 2pts Win (7/2)
Dubawi Fifty has been a big improver over the past year or so but he comes up against an unexposed, fellow improver this time in the shape of American Gigolo and he has to concede 8lbs to Harry Fry’s gelding. A 130 rated hurdler he has kept some good company in that sphere including when competing in a Grade 1 at Aintree last spring, he’s 2-3 since moving over to the flat and they have all been over 1m4f. Upped to 2 miles on his handicap debut, I’m expecting this trip to bring out more in this bumper winner and an opening mark of 88 looks very fair.
6.40pm Newcastle – Prestbury Park 1pt Win (4/1)
A dual winning two-year-old last season he made a more than encouraging reappearance at Lingfield earlier on in the month and showed he retains all of his ability and then some by running his joint best RPR. This same mark of 88 is within his capabilities, he should get the run of the race alongside his stablemate Rebel Assault and with race fitness on his side he will be bang there at the line.
